Erosions and ulcers

Some skin diseases are very prone to break down into sores. Surface sores are called erosions; these may start off as blisters or pustules. Full thickness sores are ulcers.

Ulcers on lower leg trauma

• Insect bites and stings Stasis/varicose/venous ulcers
• Pressure ulcers
• Hypertensive leg ulcers
• Arteriosclerotic ulcers
• Neuropathic ulcers eg diabetic
• Ulcerating skin cancers (BCC, SCC, Melanoma)
• Panniculitis

Ulcers on limbs &/or trunk

• Bacterial, viral or fungal infections in immune suppressed
• Mycosis fungoides
• Spider bites
• Atypical mycobacterial infections
• Genital conditions
• Porphyria cutanea tarda
• Erythropoeitic protoporphyria
• Wounds in general

Ulcers on head and neck

• Chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis (ear)
• Erosive pustular dermatosis (scalp)
• Aphthous ulcers (mouth and genitals)
• Aplasia cutis (scalp)
• Trigeminal trophic syndrome (nostril)
• Ulcerating skin cancers (BCC, SCC, Melanoma)
