The seemingly diverse conditions illustrated in this month’s quiz are cutaneous signs of metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome refers to the combination of abdominal obesity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance.

Eruptive xanthomas
What is the cause?
Eruptive xanthomas are firm yellowish papules, frequently arising in crops on the elbows, knees and buttocks. They are due to marked hypertriglyceridaemia, often in association with chronically raised blood sugar. They disappear when triglycerides are less than 10 mmol/L.
