The seemingly diverse conditions illustrated in this month’s quiz are cutaneous signs of metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome refers to the combination of abdominal obesity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance.

Striae distensae
What is the cause?
Striae distensae are linear dermal scars accompanied by epidermal atrophy that affect skin that has been stretched. They are common in overweight individuals. They may also affect pregnant women and growing adolescents of normal weight, and may appear as the result of endogenous or exogenous corticosteroids.
